The story so far….

Back to Home page

For those who might be interested, below is a brief outline of my life with horses and how I arrived at this location in life.
I would not have been able to achieve the things that I have without the love, support and tolerance of my husband Wayne and two children Catherine and Ahren. They have not only put up with my equine-itis but have all joined me on various equine adventures.
Also, it’s thanks to Wayne that I’ve been able to share information with so many people. He has built, changed and added to this website since its development in 2003.
Jenny Lomas

Ever since I can remember, I wanted a horse.
As a small child I would wish for a horse on every occasion. Never a pony. Always a horse.
12 years of wishing finally paid off and a farm we moved to had a resident horse. Not exactly one of nature’s beauties, either in nature or looks, but a horse she was and I had my eye on her.
It was agreed that this rogue that nobody wanted anything to do with could be moved to the paddock beside the house we lived in and I could ride her.
So began my crash (excuse the pun) course in horse riding. More falling off, than actual riding.
Kim knew all the tricks in the book and a few that hadn’t been written yet.
She could buck, bite, kick and bolt with the best of them.
Her favorite trick was galloping as fast as she could towards the barbed wire fence and turning at the last minute so I’d land tangled in it.
Basically anything that cut into her eating time wasn’t on her agenda and the sooner she could ditch the annoying brat on her back and get back to the food, the better!
But I had a horse and I soon learnt that hitting the ground hurt way more than the sheer terror of actually staying on the horse.
It got to the point where I could pretty much stay on no matter what stunt she pulled. Though the ‘wipe the kid off under a low tree branch trick’ could still catch me unawares occasionally.
As I developed stickability good old Kim pulled a few new tricks out of the bag, ranging from painful to humorous.
The painful being savage bites on the shoulder or back shortly after catching said horse and leading her to a fence to climb on board - life lesson number 42b - never get too close to the gift horses mouth.
The most humorous trick (though not at the time) being the canter round the kid in circles going “nah nah nah nah nah, you can’t catch me”
This was an upgraded version of the ‘walk away whenever the kid comes near’ trick. Very popular. Also very interesting as it was at the ripe young age of 12 that I realised horses could hear what you think. During one of the follow the leader sessions aka-‘try to catch the bloody horse that keeps walking away from you’ I got so angry that I mentally shouted a very bad word at Kim.
The sentence was (you fill in the gaps) “ OH, FOR, F….SAKE KIM. STAND STILL!”
She immediately halted. I thought “Oh, my God! They can hear what you think!”
I picked my jaw up off the ground and caught the horse.
Kim was eventually gifted to me and for all her heinous crimes taught me more as a child than most riders learn in a lifetime.
My eventual entry into the world of Natural Hoof Care started with Kim.
She wouldn’t let anyone else handle her feet without a huge fight so I started trimming her hooves from the age of twelve, this lead to learning how to shoe in my 20’s then 20 years later came the discovery that horses were actually better off without shoes and the Barefoot journey began.
In my teens I breed Kim to an Anglo/Arab stallion and Cameo was born.
I kept Kim for the rest of her life and still have Cameo, who turned 30 on the 10 of January 2007.
Cameo had Connor in 1992.
There have been many horses between Kim and Connor. I’ve worked in the Thoroughbred industry, riding track work and foaling mares.
I’ve ridden competitively in Dressage, Eventing, Endurance, Show Hunter and Show Jumping, started young horses for myself and other people for disciplines ranging from pleasure riding to thoroughbred racing
I’ve been an Instructor/ Trainer of horses and riders and have myself had the pleasure of training with some of the worlds most talented riders and trainers.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my life with horses and couldn’t imagine life without them.
Our 12 acres of land is full of horses in need of a home.
These days I enjoy pleasure riding when I get the chance to ride.
My life now is overflowing with horses-not just my own.
As a Natural Hoof Care Practitioner I get to enjoy helping hundreds of horses and their owners find a healthier, happier path through life.
I meet incredible people doing incredible things and find myself truly blessed to have found a way to give something back to the horses that have given me so much.
